Contour Shaker
A salt & pepper shaker set produced locally in the US for Areaware
2025
Home Appliance
Contour Shaker is a sculptural two-piece salt and pepper set that promotes local production in the USA. Designed for efficient wood-lathe manufacturing, it has a simple nested composition balancing with expressive form, aligning with Areaware’s commitment to thoughtful, wellcrafted tabletop objects.
Background
As a familiar everyday object, a salt and pepper shaker allows the design to focus on form, material, and user interaction. Its small scale also makes it suitable for local production and manufacturing exploration.

insight
Compared to products such as Areaware’s Everybody Grinder or OXO’s plastic shakers, a wooden alternative offers a more sustainable option for tabletop accessories. Made from locally sourced wood and crafted through a hand-turned process, it helps reduce waste and avoid plastics while bringing the warmth, natural feel, and durability of wood to everyday use.
Material Selection
Made from locally sourced red oak, Contour Shaker combines sustainability with simple, functional design. The warmth and grain of the wood are emphasized through wood turning, a process that minimizes material waste. By producing the shakers locally, the project supports regional craft and reduces the environmental impact associated with long-distance manufacturing and plastic components. Compared to mass-produced tabletop objects, Contour Shaker offers a more tactile, durable, and low-impact alternative rooted in material honesty and thoughtful making.

EXPLORATion
Initial 3D-printed models helped evaluate form, scale, and function. Through iterative refinement, the design evolved into a dual-form composition with nested shapes.

Refinement

Wood Turning
The geometry of Contour Shaker was designed around the constraints of wood turning. Block diagrams were used to determine efficient stock dimensions, while custom jigs ensured consistency during production and helped reduce material waste.

Final Design
The final design evolved into a nested set of convex and concave forms, refined through sketches, 3D-printed prototypes, and iterative testing of proportion, and fit. Dimensions are informed by the standard sizes of chisels and drill bits used on the lathe.
fabrication
To validate the production, planning, and design process, 10 batches were produced as a proof of concept for potential mass manufacturing
